A Legacy of Unwavering Excellence: 109 Years of Debate Mastery

Since its inception in 1915, The English Debating Society of Ananda College has been a key organization at the school, dedicated to developing students' oratory skills, presentation abilities, and leadership qualities. The Society has built a strong reputation within the English-speaking community and achieved many remarkable milestones. The passion, keenness, and enthusiasm of emerging talents in debating at Ananda have been the driving force behind these achievements. As a result, The English Debating Society remains a leading force in the island's debating arena.

Main Initiatives

Dr. N. M. Perera Memorial Challenge Trophy: The oldest debating championship in Sri Lanka, dating back to 1987. This tournament brings in schools from all over the country to compete against each other over the course of three days of debate and is one of the most well-recognized tournaments within the country. D. N. Wickramasinghe Novice Debating Championship: Being one of the few novice debating tournaments in Sri Lanka, this tournament acts as an introduction to tournament-level debating for many new debaters and contributes to the development of young debating talent within Sri Lanka.

Notable Achievements

Team Achievements: Champions of the Sri Lanka Schools Debating Championship 2023, Selected for the Debaters’ Council League 2023, and Finalists of the Impromptus Inter School Debating Championship 2024.
