First-Ever BMI Unit Established at Ananda College Primary Section

A historic milestone was marked at the Primary Section of Ananda College, Colombo, with the official establishment of a BMI (Body Mass Index) Measurement Unit for students.

The event commenced with the blessings of the Maha Sanga, invoking spiritual auspiciousness. Following the religious observances, the unit was ceremonially declared open and officially handed over to the young Anandians, signalling a new era in student health monitoring.

This groundbreaking initiative—spearheaded by Principal Mr D M L P Dissanayake in collaboration with the Old Anandians Medical Guild—is believed to be the first of its kind in a Sri Lankan school, highlighting Ananda College’s pioneering role in promoting student health and wellness.

Several distinguished Old Anandians graced the event, including Dr Palitha Mahipala (President of the Old Anandians Medical Guild and former Secretary of Health), Prof Harendra de Silva (former President of the Guild), Dr Chamath Samaranayake (Secretary of the Guild), Dr Ranjith Batuwanthudawa (Director, Health Promotion Bureau), and Dr Monika Wijerathne (Director of Nutrition, Ministry of Health). Their presence underscored the significance of the occasion and the collaborative efforts of the medical fraternity.

The establishment of the BMI Unit was made possible through the generous funding and initiative of the Old Anandians Medical Guild. The project stands as a testament to the enduring commitment of Ananda College and its alumni to the holistic development and well-being of its students.
