Ananda College, Colombo proudly celebrates a historic achievement by two of its outstanding scholars, Hiruna De Silva and Meedum Mendis, who secured Sri Lanka’s first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships 2025 held in Swansea, Wales.
Competing in the highly competitive 12.5m Line Throw event, Hiruna and Meedum demonstrated remarkable skill, coordination, and composure to outperform teams from across the Commonwealth. Their flawless performance earned them the gold medal, marking a monumental milestone in the history of lifesaving sports in Sri Lanka.
The Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships, organized by the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) and the Commonwealth Games Federation, brings together elite young lifesavers from around the world. This year’s event also served as a qualifier for the upcoming World Games in China, adding even greater significance to their victory.
As proud scholars of Ananda College, Hiruna and Meedum have not only brought honour to the nation but have also upheld the long-standing legacy of sporting and academic excellence nurtured at the College. Their success stands as a shining example of dedication, teamwork, and the spirit of Ananda.

We also take this moment to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated coach, the Master-in-Charge (MIC) of swimming, and all those who guided and supported these young athletes throughout their journey. Their commitment, encouragement, and behind-the-scenes efforts were instrumental in shaping this historic victory. A sincere thank you also goes out to the parents, staff members, Old Anandians, and well-wishers whose constant support uplifted the morale of the team and helped make this dream a reality.
The College community extends its warmest congratulations to these two champions and celebrates this achievement as a national triumph.
